The Lower Grand Coulee, a geographical area starting at Dry Falls and follows the monoclinal flexure to Soap Lake where the canyons end, is geologically one of the more unusual places in the world. Like a precious stone, it embodies the fascinating history of the natural events that created it, and the diversity of people who have grown to love and appreciate its unique nature. The Ice Age Floods Institute characterizes the Dry Falls area as "what remains of the biggest waterfall on earth," created by cataclysmic geologic events. Soap Lake has the most diverse mineral content of any other body of water and is one of only 11 lakes like it in the world. For hundreds of years, people have traveled here to explore, study, dream and heal.

FLGC is partnering with other organizations to further the knowledge and appreciation of this area, promote creativity and build connections within the community. We’re just getting started and look forward to expanding and growing our reach.

Wahluke School District Literacy Support
Wahluke Junior High School is in need of books they can put into the hands of students that will help promote reading literacy. We are working with staff at the WSD to facilitate the purchase of a wide variety of books that can be distributed to kids who are learning from home. With the advent of remote learning, lack of access to public and school libraries, as well as lack of internet access, getting learning material into the hands of kids is more important than ever. Check back soon for an update about what we're doing this 2020/2021 school year.

Supporting Community Through Art
Masquers Theater Summer Youth Program
The Masquers Theater Summer Youth Program is very popular here in Soap Lake. Every year some ambitious and creative volunteers spend a week with over 30 kids, ages 8 to 15 years old, producing a musical. This year the musical was Adventures of a Comic Book Artist. At the end of the week, kids put on a performance, drawing the attendance of families, friends and theater lovers from throughout the local area. According to Masquers Theater, this production drew a record crowd, making for standing-room only in the theater!

Art on the Avenues' Beauty of Bronze
FLGC sponsored the participation of Soap Lake 5th grade students in the Beauty of Bronze program, an Art on the Avenues’ annual arts education program that takes place in Wenatchee, WA. This program gives fifth graders the opportunity to work with a professional artist to create and exhibit their own small bronze sculptures. In 2020, Beauty of Bronze is going online with a virtual program and will serve more students.
